Karma

The Boat

Karma and crew

Karma is a Spirit 6.5. A 22 foot swing keel trailerable sailboat, made by Glastron under the name Spirit Yachts. Her home waters are a high mountain glacial fed lake in Wyoming that freezes over in the winter. She is generally the first boat on the lake after the ice goes off in the spring, and the last boat off in the fall. When Karma isn’t being sailed, she can usually be found docked at the Lakeside Lodge marina.

Karma is outfitted with a portable head to keep the ladies happy on extended cruises. Her electronics package includes a marine radio, an XM radio, and a CD player (all sailboats need to have the ability to blast a little Jimmy Buffet).

For such a small boat, Karma handles quite well, and is capable of holding course even when heeled past 40 degrees. This gives her crew the advantage of carrying more sail in the variable and generally gusty winds found on Fremont lake. She can hold course through a gust without getting rounded, or flogging her sails, and just keep plugging along.

The 2006 sailing season began with the replacement of all of Karma’s standing rigging, and the addition of a roller furling genoa. The main sail was also replaced, and a gennaker was added to her sail inventory.

Karma’s crew are enthusiastic sailors who enjoy introducing people to sailing. Typically all one has to do to get onboard for a trip, is to show up at the marina on a windy afternoon. During the week she can be usually seen leaving the marina shortly after 5:00, and around early afternoon on the weekends.

Wherever we want to go, we go.
That’s what a ship is, you know. Not just a keel and a hull and a deck and sails. That’s what a ship needs.
But what a ship is ...
... is freedom!
